Here is the September Newsletter:-

Dear H4H Supporter,

On the 17th August Emma and I were delighted to be able to go to Edinburgh and be at the opening of the first Army Recovery Centre. This project, a joint venture between H4H, the Army and Erskine, is the first of its kind and a great step forward for the recovery of our wounded men and women. Named the Mark Wright House after Cpl Mark Wright GC, PARA who died saving his patrol in a minefield near Kajaki in Helmand, it is a house named for a hero and will help other heroes. It is a fitting tribute to Mark, and his parents, Bob and Jem, were there to help with the ceremony. Our thanks go to everyone in the Army, MOD and Erskine who has made this such a success. We are now looking forward to opening further houses and we are in a race to get them built as soon as we can. Read more . . .

The H4H Rehabilitation Complex at Headley Court is coming on very well indeed and the steel framework is up and it is looking wonderful, we can’t wait to see that pool ready to swim in! There is no slacking off the pace at H4H and we have over 8000 events registered as people respond to the call to do your bit for the wounded. Yesterday, Emma went to the printers at Frome to see the first pages of Gill Shaw’s superb book The Hero Inside come off the presses and came home full of admiration and enthusiasm. This book, the work of celebrity photographer and Rifleman’s Mum Gill Shaw and published by Andrew Johnston of Quiller Press, is quite simply a masterpiece and will be the book on everyone’s Christmas list this year. It launches on 17th September and the printers said they found it hard to concentrate as they kept wanting to read it as it went though the presses.... That’s a recommendation. Read more . .

Our new website was launched last weekend. It has been a real labour of love for Ben and his team so we hope you will think it is worth all the hours of burning the midnight oil. Finally, I have started to include some words from ‘Our man in Helmand’ in these newsletters. He is one of many thousands serving over there on our behalf but he speaks for them all. He is unable to send an email this month but he got through to his family by satellite phone and this extract from his Dad’s email sums it up.

“He is currently in a small patrol base up on a hill, overlooking a few compounds and with views into a wadi. The base is very basic, four mud walls with a mast that has some sophisticated camera kit and a ISO (?) container from where they can see what the cameras cover. They oversee the local area from the four sangars (think castle turrets) and hope to build up a pattern of life and to prevent the enemy from moving along the wadi. They sleep on the ground and their kit fits into their back pack. While we talked there were a couple of bangs which he explained were ‘our’ mortars firing flares to illuminate the area in response to seeing some activity and later, he said had to go as one of his guns ‘was giving someone a warning’. Under the rules of engagement, if they see suspicious activity, such as someone digging in the wadi (likely to be the enemy planting an IED... mine), they can fire a warning shot.

The conditions are very basic, no helicopters so no mail, no fresh water, no fresh food. They lack knives and forks and cut plastic bottles in half to make cups. They can spare no water to shave so all have straggly beards, no loo paper and no showers, so they put up with the pong. They do have some flour so the soldiers are improvising and he says he had ‘pancakes’ this morning, cooked by a couple of the Fijians.

I have mentioned before that he has had 1 killed and 7 wounded in his platoon but he has been at many more incidents including one when “Yesterday the camp was attacked by RPG. It sailed straight into the Mortar’s accommodation and we had 9 casualties. I helped casevac one by stretcher into the cooking area. Claret covered the floor as wounds were bandaged and ears were held together by team medics. Dazed Riflemen stared blankly, unhearing due to burst ear drums.”. An incident like that never makes the news but he has been a part of it.

As parents we are so aware that our conversations over the sat phone are stilted, we are normally cut off at least twice and we have no idea when he may ring, sometimes once a week, sometimes a longer gap. When he does ring, we don’t know what he has just been through and sometimes it is after he has been involved in an incident, several times it has been when he has had blokes wounded or been in some sort of contact. We have no warning, the phone just rings, during supper, at work, while we are walking the dogs, and suddenly we are having a conversation with our son who has had to save someone’s life or is just needing a chat. Tonight was great, the line was clear, it only cut off twice and I could hear most of what he said. My daughter came home as we were talking and I handed over to hear them banter away in a way that I couldn’t hope to do. I would imagine that the few minutes of family slanging works better than any conversation with a concerned Dad!”

I'm Back!

Hi Everyone

I'm very sorry I haven't been on the Forum for some time but this is due to illness and Holiday.

Since early June I've been suffering from dangerously high Blood Pressure and was told, in no uncertain terms, that I had to take life very quietly for a while. In the end I had to give in to my Doctor and take Medication for it. We are trying to sort this out at the moment.

The last two weeks George, Max and I have been on Holiday down in South Devon. I spent most of the time just relaxing and reading so I didn't take many photographs at all. Those I did I'll post at a later date.

I would like to thank all those people who have Emailed or PM'd me as they were concerned about my absence. I really appreciated it. Normal service will now resume!!;)

I'm attending a certain Concert at Ripley Castle tonight and am really looking forward to meeting old friends and making new ones. I hope you all have a safe journey.

Fairford - Air Tattoo 2010

Hi all

Last weekend saw my annual pilgrimage to the heart of the beautiful Cotswolds and to Fairford Air Force Base near Cirencester, in what is described as the largest Air Show in Europe.

This years event was held over the 2 days in varying weather conditions(Saturday sunshine and Sunday cloud) which in itself gave the watching public 2 seperate displays from the participants. Depending on the level of the cloud base determined which display the participant performed, which at times can be extremely different as you can imagine.

A show i would always recommend to families as there is also so much entertainment taking place on the ground(non aviation related) at the same time. My advice would be to take protection for the ears though, particularly for the children, as it can be rather noisy at times.

From Fairford it was then down to Farnborough in Hampshire for their Air Show, but more of that show later.

Other Forum Members may chuckle at this!
Last night I had a dream that I drove to Richmond,Surrey to find hundreds of people congregating around the theatre.I asked some gentleman what was going on and he replied that Katherine Jenkins was coming to the theatre for a Concert.Apparently the theatre manager had just had a row with Katherine as he was saying he did not approve of her dress and that she would not now be appearing.The disappointed crowd was now starting to disperse,at this point I awoke!
I wonder what the significence of this dream could be? Was her dress extra cheeky and I cannot imagine Katherine rowing with anybody!

the alps

hi everyone,

i tried 2 put my some photos here but having prob with the new flick settings 2 get right setting anyway here the link 2 my flick page with all the photos from my hol in the alps.

I really enjoyed it there didnt 2 my dream or what liked 2 have done played it safe i learnt a lot still walked further or higher each day than done before in lake districk or wales the good walks are often between 2000ft 2500 in the alps that height in metres i was apprensive anyhere the link to flick page where put my photos here i am sorry i havent put any directly here. Also i felt was very lucky with weather only rained when came off the moutains would love 2 go there again anyway here the link to all my photos made the alps so everyone can see also just wanted my thoughts are with the family and friends of those two killed in the alps not far from where i was

For my second week in Austria I was in Neustift which is a superb area for walking.

Again the weather was a bit problematic and on the 20th June I was walking in 6 inches of fresh snow that had fallen overnight and during the morning. I have always fancied seeing Austria in the winter but was not expecting this in June! :P

On my walk it started off with just a little covering of snow

and then it got a bit deeper

There were not many people out that day - my only encounter with life!

At times I was glad of the signposts - at this stage the snow was 6 inches deep.

A few days later I took the cable car up to 2600m and the fresh snow was 2 feet deep there. In the summer there would not normally be any snow in this picture!

Oberammergau and Seefeld

I have finally found time to post a few photos from my recent trip to Austria. The holiday was good but the weather was not too great so not much sun about!!

Here we start off with a real highlight of the trip for me which was the Oberammergau Passionplay. This takes place once every ten years and the full cast is made up from the residents of the village Oberrammergau. There are about 2400 people involved in the Play from a village which has approx 4700 inhabitants. What a talented lot they are because it was absolutely wonderful - superb acting, singing and orchestration which I would say was at a very professional level even if it is performed by amateurs. They give up their jobs for the 5 month run of the play. The performance started at 2.30pm until 5.00pm and then there was an interval with the second part running from 8.00pm to 10.45pm - spellbinding throughout and the time just vanished.
Oberammergau is also famous for the murals on the house walls

Chiles and Bleakley cemented their partnership on The One Show

ITV's new breakfast show, to be hosted by Adrian Chiles and Christine Bleakley, will be called Daybreak.

The new-look programme, which is due to replace GMTV in September, will come from brand new studios.

GMTV and ITV daytime director Alison Sharman said the revamped programme is "our bid to reclaim the top breakfast show spot".

Lorraine Kelly will continue to host a magazine show which will form part of the early morning schedule.

'Lagging behind'

The Scottish presenter, who helped to launch GMTV in 1993, said: "I love breakfast TV and I am absolutely delighted to be continuing with my own show."

Chiles and Bleakley, who left the BBC's One Show to join ITV, "will be the lynchpins of Daybreak with their unique and brilliant partnership", said Ms Sharman.

The pair will be joined by a team of special correspondents who will shape the news agenda on the programme.

Entertainment content, interviews and lifestyle features are also expected to form part of the show.

Ms Sharman also admitted that GMTV "has been lagging behind its competitors in recent years".

"We want to ensure that the core audience of housewives with children keep watching, but are also determined to attract new viewers to our revitalised breakfast show," she added.

Plans to overhaul GMTV have prompted a number of its current presenters to leave the programme, including Ben Shephard and Andrew Castle.

Penny Smith, who had been a familiar face on the breakfast programme for 17 years, made her final appearance on the famous sofa last month.

Bleakley was due to continue hosting The One Show until September, but the BBC has announced that she will not be returning to the teatime programme.

Hi Lisa,

It's hard to believe that another year has flown by and once more it's your birthday. Perhaps this year you can stick to the correct date and not try to squeeze in as many birthdays as the Queen!

Spending all day in meetings is perhaps not the ideal way to celebrate but I'm sue you'll manage to scoff a cake or two during the day. And do remember, you already had the best birthday present in the world last thursday...MY COMPANY!! :D:P

There was a picture of taken Tim when he was eight reading this magazine, Years later when he was communicating with his future wife he sent the picture of him as a youngster to her, When they got married she had blown up the picture and framed it, a few years later they were in a US second hand comic shop, he had a look for this magazine and found three copies, he bought the reasonably priced good copy, he took it home and when he removed it from the plastic bag he wondered if he would have the same contented look on his face as when he was eight, to his amazement it was his magazine with his name written in it, he has no idea how it got from his home in Liverpool to the US after all those years.

Time To Say Goodbye

Hi everyone

A very big thank you to all the members who have contributed to Katherine's forums over the last Five+ years I've been a member.

For four of those years I've undertaken the moderating role, (Just before I met Katherine at Hay festival in May 2006), I've had a lot of fun and met some great people along the way.

Now I've now reached a stage where I want to move on and get my life back, I've just had confirmation that Warners will now moderate the forum themselves

I'll still be around supporting Katherine but not contributing to the forum at the same level as I have in the past.

To Katherine, it has been an absolute pleasure to support you and I wish you continued and increased success for the future

I have just arrived back from a 10 day holiday Gold del Sur, Tenerife in the Canary Islands. I had a fantastic time, although as neither myself or my friend can drive, we couldn't really explore other areas of the Island.

We went partly for the good weather and partly for the World Cup, although apart from the last four days it was actually cloudy!

Sadly, it seems the Island has been hit hard by the recession, a lot of hotels have been shut down and it was very quiet. Still had a good time though.

Would i let Katherine drive my 1064cc Moto Guzzi with it's bright red double adult sidecar if it was at somewhere like the Top Gear track with it's nice long straight ex runway no problem . After reading Katherine's autobiography i think she would be nervous to start with but would soon get hooked on the feel of the power at her fingertips .
